Experience and education are the two main stays of real estate appraisals. Larry G. Long began his career in the real estate industry in 1970 as a real estate salesman, then as a broker in 1973. He and his father founded and operated a full time real estate brokerage company beginning in 1973. Larry G. Long began appraising in 1974 and in 1984 founded Long & Associates as a full time real estate appraisal and consulting firm.  In the early 1990s, appraisers were required to obtain either a license or to become Certified to complete real estate appraisals for any federally regulated institution (generally the mortgage industry).

In the State of Texas two levels of Certification are available, residential or general.  Larry G. Long is State Certified General, which is the highest level of Certification available in the State of Texas. The State Cerified General Real Estate Appraiser can complete appraisal assignments on 1 to 4 family in addition to other types of real estate, such as commercial, retail, office, industrial, acreage, farms and ranches.
